Fish Kill Disaster in Ennore River

Thousands of fish and various aquatic species were discovered dead in the Kosasthalaiyar river near Ennore on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The deceased creatures, including multiple fish species, prawns, and crabs, were observed floating and washed ashore in large quantities, presenting an unprecedented ecological disaster for the local fisherfolk. Residents from eight fishing villages have initiated a road blockade, expressing distress over the lack of government attention and support following the incident.

The Ennore estuary and Kosasthalaiyar River have long been subjects of environmental concern due to continuous pollution from industrial effluents, sewage, and thermal discharges. Past expert assessments, including those prompted by the National Green Tribunal, have highlighted significant environmental damage and ecological impact on the backwaters and river systems from industrial activities. Researchers have also documented fish mortality linked to industrial waste and domestic sewage in the area.

Protesting communities are demanding that water and fish samples be collected and analyzed to identify the precise cause of the mass mortality, whether it be chemical pollution, sudden water quality changes, or oxygen depletion. Their livelihoods depend on the health of these waters, and they seek immediate action and accountability.
