England's Land Registry Opens: Who Owns What Now?
18 Mar
Summary
- Land Registry access will be simplified, lifting paywalls.
- New framework assesses land use for food, housing, and net zero.
- Tools will help identify areas lacking green space for investment.

Finding out who owns land in England will become significantly easier as the government plans to lift paywalls on large parts of the Land Registry. This reform is part of a comprehensive land use framework, the first of its kind, designed to optimize the use of farmland, nature reserves, and degraded land.
The framework will also outline the land needed to meet the UK's net zero target, including areas for forests, peatland restoration, solar, and wind farms. New mapping will aid in assessing how peatland restoration can mitigate river flooding, a growing concern due to climate change.
Additionally, councils will receive tools to pinpoint areas lacking green space, enabling targeted investment to meet the goal of ensuring everyone is within a 15-minute walk of nature. The government aims to steer housebuilders away from floodplains and promote nature-friendly farming practices.
