England Faces Fifth Heatwave Amid Severe Drought Crisis

England is confronting the prospect of additional regions being declared drought-stricken as a fifth heatwave is anticipated this week. Officials from the National Drought Group are scheduled to convene to assess the situation, following July's criteria declaration for half of England and all of Wales.

Drought was officially declared in several areas, including East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London, Thames Valley, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Devon, Cornwall, the West Midlands, and Wessex. These dry conditions are projected to persist, with temperatures potentially soaring to 36C in parts of East Anglia and the Southeast.

This marks a second consecutive summer of drought, with experts warning of significant long-term environmental, wildlife, and economic consequences. Many water companies have already implemented hosepipe bans, affecting millions of customers, and over 25 million people are subject to water use restrictions nationwide.

While parts of southern England have experienced minimal rainfall, Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to receive rain. Meanwhile, a significant wildfire at Dunwich Heath nature reserve, which scorched 150 hectares, is still being managed, with underground fires burning at extreme temperatures.
