England in Crisis: Severe Drought Declared

Southern England is now under a "severe drought" declaration by the UK government, a decision made after an unprecedented period of extreme weather. The nation endured its hottest summer on record in 2026, with a significant lack of rainfall not seen since 1836. This has led to over 80 percent of England experiencing drought conditions as below-average rainfall persists into autumn.

"Record-breaking summer heat and severe drought have put our water resources under immense pressure," stated Philip Duffy, head of the Environment Agency. The "severe drought" status specifically affects Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, East Sussex, and West Sussex. This critical stage was triggered by exceptionally low indicators sustained over a prolonged duration, with two major reservoirs in the southwest serving nearly 400,000 properties critically low, holding less than 20 percent of their capacity.

The government notes that southeast and southwest England have experienced their driest April to September stretch in over 100 years. Nationally, average reservoir levels were at 54 percent as of last week, with October rainfall at only 10 percent of the average. Scientists emphasize that climate change is exacerbating weather events like droughts and heatwaves, leading to more frequent record-breaking occurrences. The government is urging water companies to monitor intake and customers to reduce usage, as usage restrictions are already in effect in several areas. This level of drought has not been seen in decades, placing immense pressure on farmers, anglers, and firefighters grappling with challenging wildfires.
