23 Feb
Summary
- Endangered grasshopper sighted after being unrecorded since 1980.
- Discovery marks a conservation success for Umtamvuna Nature Reserve.
- Protected areas are vital for conserving overlooked biodiversity.

South African scientists have rediscovered the granulate bladder grasshopper, an endangered species, within the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve. This marks the first official sighting of the insect since 1980, after more than four decades of uncertain extinction status. The rediscovery is a significant conservation success for the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, known for its focus on protecting and restoring plants and invertebrates.
Dr. Adrian Armstrong of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife highlighted that such findings emphasize the vital role of protected areas in conserving biodiversity, including species that are rarely seen or understood. Grasshoppers, in general, play essential roles in fertilizing soil, cycling nutrients, and serving as a food source for other wildlife, making restoration efforts impactful.
The successful rediscovery reaffirms the importance of continuous research, monitoring, and effective management of protected areas to safeguard South Africa's rich biodiversity.
