The Eravikulam National Park (ENP) near Munnar has been identified as a vital habitat for the endangered Resplendent Shrub Frog. A recent survey documented a healthy population of this species, which is endemic to the Munnar region and highly susceptible to climate change.
Herpetologists emphasize that these high-altitude grasslands are the frog's final survival stronghold. Rising temperatures normally prompt cold-climate frogs to move higher, but the Resplendent Shrub Frog already inhabits the highest elevations, making these areas its sole habitat. Destruction of these grasslands could lead to extinction.
The survey, conducted from September 3 to 6 across several protected areas, also celebrated the success of eco-restoration projects in Shola National Parks. These efforts have facilitated the return of native species like the Anamalai Spiny Lizard and Shola Night Frog, signaling significant ecological recovery.
