Elephant Calf Found Dead Near Forest Border
23 Oct
Summary
- A one-year-old elephant calf was discovered deceased on farmland.
- Officials are investigating the exact cause of the calf's death.
- This marks the second elephant death in Sullia this year.
A one-year-old elephant calf was discovered dead on farmland in Harladka, Thodikana village, situated near the border of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu. Forest officials confirmed that a herd of approximately seven to eight elephants had entered the farmland during the night, raiding crops before attempting to return to the forest.
Evidence suggests the calf may have slipped on the wet terrain or was possibly injured by other elephants in the herd during their return. A postmortem examination is underway to determine the precise cause of death. This incident is the second reported elephant death in Sullia this year; a previous case involved a younger calf attacked by a male elephant.
Elephants are known to inhabit forest patches within Sullia and surrounding areas, often venturing into adjacent farmlands, leading to crop-raiding incidents. The herd involved in the recent discovery has since left the area.
