Edinburgh Road Chaos: 6 Months of Sewage Work
19 Jan
Summary
- Gorgie Road to close for six months for sewage upgrades.
- Project aims to improve infrastructure during heavy rain.
- Work expected to finish by July 2026.

Gorgie Road in Edinburgh is set to close for a significant six-month period due to essential sewage works. Beginning Sunday, January 25th, the vital transport link connecting west Edinburgh with the city centre will be inaccessible between Robb's Loan and Hutchison Crossway. This closure is necessary for a £3 million project undertaken by Scottish Water to enhance the city's aging Victorian-era wastewater infrastructure.
The primary objective of this extensive maintenance is to bolster the sewage system's resilience, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. By upgrading these critical underground systems, the project aims to substantially reduce the amount of debris entering the Water of Leith. This environmental initiative is expected to contribute to cleaner rivers and a healthier ecosystem for both local wildlife and residents.
Scottish Water acknowledges the considerable disruption this £3m project will cause but is collaborating with partners like the City of Edinburgh Council to mitigate the impact. The work is slated for completion by July 2026. Commuters and visitors are urged to follow diversion signs and allow ample extra travel time, especially during peak hours, as major attractions like Tynecastle Stadium and Scottish Gas Murrayfield are located in the vicinity.
