At Indore's Bhikshuk Punarvas Kendra, 32 individuals formerly living on the streets have successfully produced over 11,000 'Gomaye Shri Ganesh' idols made from cow dung. Managed by Sanstha Pravesh, this initiative aims to blend social rehabilitation with environmental consciousness. The project has seen significant demand, with thousands of idols sold within Madhya Pradesh and substantial orders fulfilled in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
These idols offer an environmentally sound alternative to plaster of Paris statues, which often pollute water bodies. The cow dung idols are chemical-free and naturally dissolve in water, acting as organic fertilizer for plants. This commercial use of cow dung also generates crucial revenue for local gaushalas, aiding in the preservation of indigenous cattle breeds.
The artisans, many of whom previously relied on begging, have acquired valuable professional skills through this endeavor. They crafted idols in 16 different designs and various sizes, featuring popular forms of Lord Ganesh, providing them with a steady income and a sense of dignity.
