An English professor at Christ University in Bengaluru has developed an innovative solution to plastic pollution: eco-friendly straws crafted from coconut leaves. This initiative, named Sunbird Straws, has achieved significant global reach, exporting its products to more than twenty-five countries.
The journey began in 2017 when Professor Saji Varghese discovered a naturally coiled coconut leaf, inspiring him to experiment with creating plastic-free alternatives. After extensive trials, he patented a durable, antifungal straw that remains stable in water for over six hours and has a shelf life exceeding one year.
Sunbird Straws supports rural communities by establishing manufacturing units where women are employed to collect and process coconut fronds. This model has not only led to substantial business growth, with the company exporting millions of straws, but has also garnered several prestigious awards for social and environmental impact.
