An inaugural "Walk the Wild 5K" event is scheduled for September 12 in East Jordan, aiming to support conservation and scholarship initiatives within the Jordan River watershed. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a scenic section of the watershed, including wetlands, a freshwater estuary, and forested areas along the Jordan River, which is Michigan's first designated Wild and Scenic River.
The event will take place on the accessible Don and Eileen Klein Boardwalk and Trail, as well as the Little Traverse Conservancy Rogers Family Homestead Preserve. This fundraiser is designed to accommodate all abilities while highlighting the area's natural beauty.
Funds raised will contribute to the Friends of the Jordan River Watershed, supporting restoration projects, trail enhancements, environmental education, and community outreach. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will fund the John Richter Scholarship, which recognizes and encourages college-bound graduates committed to environmental stewardship and conservation.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Sportsman's Park, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the 5K walk. The registration fee is $30 per person, which includes a T-shirt, or $20 for those who opt out of receiving a T-shirt. Advance registration is available online.
