Earth Hurtling Towards Climate Chaos, Warn Scientists

Summary
- 22 of 34 planetary vital signs at record levels
- Greenhouse gases, ocean acidification, and sea levels soaring
- Devastating climate-related disasters surging worldwide

According to a new report published on October 29, 2025, Earth is hurtling towards a "fundamentally different planet" as the climate crisis accelerates at an alarming rate. The international team of scientists behind the study reveal that 22 out of 34 of the planet's vital signs are now "flashing red" at record levels, including the continued accumulation of greenhouse gases, loss of sea ice and glaciers, rising temperatures, and ocean acidification.
The authors point to a year of devastating climate-related events, such as the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles, the catastrophic flooding in Texas, and the deadly heatwaves across Europe, as evidence that the consequences of human-driven climate change are no longer future threats but are already here. They warn that time is running out to combat this crisis, which is pushing the planet to the brink.
One of the report's authors, Johan Rockström, calls climate change an "unprecedented threat" and states that the last few years have seen vital signs breaking records by "extraordinary margins". The scientists propose several high-impact strategies to limit the damage, including a rapid shift to renewable energy sources and protecting and restoring natural ecosystems like forests.
