Eagle Rock Ranch in Park County, Colorado, has undergone a remarkable transformation since Dave and Jeannie Gottenborg acquired it approximately 15 years before 2026. Inheriting a severely damaged property with muddy corrals and depleted resources, the Gottenborgs initiated extensive restoration efforts. They replaced worn-out fencing with wildlife-safe designs and improved hay field management to prevent erosion and enhance soil moisture retention.
Water management systems were redesigned, including a settling pond feeding hay fields via an underground culvert and a solar-powered pump delivering fresh water to 10 stock tanks. This allowed for rotational grazing, spreading livestock impact and increasing forage availability. The ranch's creek and surrounding habitats have also been revitalized with erosion control, fish habitat structures, and the planting of hundreds of willow saplings.
Further conservation measures include ladders in stock tanks to prevent bird drownings, installation of bird and bat houses, and owl boxes for natural rodent control. Dave Gottenborg also spearheaded the nation's first elk migration agreement, a voluntary program compensating landowners for allowing elk passage. The ranch actively participates in research on wildlife crossings and road safety for elk and deer.
On April 20, 2026, Eagle Rock Ranch was announced as the recipient of the 2026 Colorado Leopold Conservation Award. This award celebrates significant efforts in improving soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat on working lands. The Gottenborgs received the award in June, along with a $10,000 prize, marking a triumph for their long-term dedication to ecological stewardship.
