E. coli Alert: Pala River Water Unsafe Post-Flood
27 Sep
Summary
- 67% of water samples from flood-affected Pala areas tested positive for E. coli.
- TDS and pH levels also exceeded permissible limits in tested water sources.
- Recommendations include scientific chlorination and mandatory post-flood testing.
A water quality assessment in flood-affected areas near the Meenachil river has detected E. coli bacteria in a significant majority of samples. The study, conducted in regions including Pala Municipality, revealed that 67% of water samples contained E. coli, raising concerns about the safety of local drinking water sources.
The analysis, which evaluated nine water quality parameters, found that Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and pH levels were also above permissible limits. Researchers attribute the heightened bacterial contamination to recent floods, which likely compromised water sources by allowing surface water intrusion. This situation underscores the vulnerability of water supplies in the aftermath of natural disasters.
To address these concerns, the assessment proposes crucial remedial measures, including scientific chlorination of water sources and implementing mandatory water quality testing after every flood event. These recommendations have been officially communicated to local authorities, including the Pala municipality, for prompt action. A broader pilot study tracking seasonal water quality variations is also underway.
The findings were formally presented to the Pala municipality, highlighting the immediate need for intervention and preventative strategies. The college undertaking the research is also pursuing certification for its laboratory from the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, aiming to enhance its capacity for future water quality monitoring and analysis.
