The Dudhmatia forest in Hazaribag was abuzz with activity on October 7, 2025, as thousands of people gathered to mark the 31st anniversary of the 'Van Raksha Bandhan-cum-Paryavaran Mela', an iconic event that has become a symbol of the region's dedication to environmental protection.
The celebration began with traditional rituals, as locals worshipped the Van Devi (Forest Goddess) and tied sacred threads to the trees, pledging to safeguard the forest ecosystem. Women sang folk songs and danced, while environmentalists and visitors from across the state joined in the festivities with enthusiasm.
Throughout the day, the fair featured a diverse array of cultural programs, school performances, exhibitions, and tableaux focused on forest conservation. The captivating Chhau dance by the Natraj Kala Kendra from Seraikela-Kharsawan enthralled the crowd, while several stalls showcased local crafts, forest products, and eco-awareness models.
The event was attended by Barkatha MLA Amit Kumar Yadav, former MP Bhubneshwar Prasad Mehta, and thousands of local residents, all of whom came together to celebrate the legacy of this cherished tradition. The movement, which began in 1955 when teacher-turned-environmentalist Mahadev Mahto first tied Rakhis to trees, has since become an inspiring example of nature conservation in the state and across the country.
