Drought Ravages Europe, Costing Billions and Crippling Key Industries

As of September 2025, Europe is grappling with a severe drought crisis that is wreaking havoc across the continent. According to a recent study, annual drought losses in the EU, UK, Norway, and Switzerland are projected to reach a staggering €17.5bn by 2025 if global heating reaches 3°C above pre-industrial levels.

The impact is being felt most acutely in the agricultural sector. Farmers like Thomas Goebel in south Brandenburg, Germany, have seen their crop yields plummet by 40-75% compared to the last two decades. Goebel, who chairs the local farmer's association, describes the hot and dry weather as a constant struggle, with his sunflowers and corn shriveling up daily.

The drought is also taking a toll on other industries. Low water levels on the Rhine River, a crucial shipping artery, have forced cargo vessels to sit idle in harbors, disrupting the flow of raw materials and goods. Meanwhile, power plants in France and Switzerland have been forced to shut down due to a lack of water cold enough for cooling.

Across the continent, the lack of rainfall is squeezing businesses and households alike. Organic farmer Adam Beer in southwest England lost 95% of his cabbage and cauliflower crops after the young plants withered in the scorching heat and dry conditions. "Your heart just drops," he said. "It's devastating."

As the climate crisis continues to intensify, experts warn that the frequency and severity of such drought events are only likely to increase, posing an ever-greater threat to Europe's economy and food security.
