A drone pilot has achieved a rare photographic milestone by capturing footage of a humpback whale birth. This event is believed to be only the fourth complete humpback whale birth ever recorded on film globally. It is also the first such documentation achieved using drone technology.
While conducting aerial observations for the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (Orrca), Alexander Forrest witnessed the birth. The whale gave birth in calm sea conditions off the NSW north coast. The captured footage beautifully illustrates the newborn calf's initial moments, including its first breath and its immediate connection with its mother.
