Dragonflies Swarm Hyderabad's Wetlands, Offering Natural Pest Control

As of October 16th, 2025, people in Hyderabad have been witnessing a resurgence of dragonfly swarms near various water bodies and thick vegetation across the city. These expert fliers, including the migratory Globe Skimmers from East Africa, have captivated locals with their ability to hover, fly backward, and even upside down.

Dragonflies are not just mesmerizing to watch, but also play a crucial role in the city's ecosystem. These tireless predators are natural pest controllers, feasting on mosquitoes and other insects. Their aquatic nymphs also devour mosquito larvae, making them an eco-friendly "biopesticide" that protects human health without the use of chemicals or sprays.

However, the sightings of these winged wonders have become less widespread in recent years. Experts have flagged concerns over the shrinking and polluted water bodies in Hyderabad, which have directly impacted the dragonfly population and their breeding grounds. Construction debris, shrinking lakes, and polluted drains have robbed these insects of their natural habitats, leading to a decline in their numbers.

Despite the challenges, some species of dragonflies continue to persist in the city's remaining clean-water pockets, including the Green Marsh Hawk, Ground Skimmer, Ditch Jewel, and Globe Skimmer. Their presence is a direct indicator of the health of Hyderabad's wetlands, as they cannot survive in polluted or oxygen-poor water.
