Dog Poo Kills Livestock: Farmer's Urgent Plea
8 May
Summary
- Dog feces can cause livestock nasty parasites and abortions.
- Cysts from ingested feces lead to carcass condemnation and financial loss.
- Farmers urge dog owners to pick up waste to protect herds and flocks.

Farmers are facing devastating consequences for their livestock due to dog waste left in fields. Clare Wise, a farmer near Darlington, County Durham, and chair of the National Farmers' Union's north livestock board, explained that when cattle and sheep ingest dog feces, they can contract "nasty parasites, unpleasant cysts and abortions." These issues can result in "huge financial losses" for farmers, particularly as the parasites can remain in pastures for months.
Cysts transmitted through dog waste can cause a slow, terminal decline in animals. These cysts are often only discovered at slaughter, leading to entire carcasses being deemed unfit for human consumption. Another serious concern is the parasite Neospora, which can cause miscarriages and pregnancy problems in livestock. Tapeworms are also a risk, impacting sheep and cattle and complicating efforts to reduce wormer use in the industry.
The problem is exacerbated in areas with high footfall, such as near popular walking routes like the coast-to-coast paths. A recent incident in Kendal, Cumbria, saw a ewe die from a disease spread by ingesting dog mess, leaving its lamb orphaned. This underscores the urgent call from farmers for dog owners to be vigilant and always pick up after their pets, emphasizing that it is a simple yet crucial act for animal welfare and farm viability.
