Little Penguin Slain by Dog on Sydney Beach
3 Mar
Summary
- A little penguin was found dead on Warriewood Beach last week.
- Necropsy suggests a dog attack caused a fatal neck wound.
- Sydney's mainland penguin colony has declined drastically.

A recent discovery on Warriewood Beach has highlighted the perilous state of Sydney's little penguin population. A penguin found deceased last week is believed to have been killed by an off-leash dog. Necropsy results from Taronga Zoo indicate a fatal puncture wound to the neck, consistent with a dog attack.
This event deals another blow to the fairy penguin colony, which is the sole breeding population of little penguins on mainland New South Wales. National Parks and Wildlife Service surveys reveal a sharp decline, from 70 breeding pairs in 2013-2014 to an alarming 15 pairs in 2024-2025.
Conservationists point to a combination of environmental pressures, including rising water temperatures and reduced food availability due to climate change, alongside direct threats from domestic animals like foxes, cats, and dogs, as contributing factors to the colony's struggle for survival.
