19 Aug
Summary
- New water monitoring project launched by South Hams District Council
- Project aims to better understand water quality in local rivers and estuaries
- Real-time data to be shared publicly via online dashboard in late 2025

In a proactive move to address water pollution, the South Hams District Council in Devon has launched a new water monitoring project. The initiative, which is being delivered in partnership with Innovative UK, the University of Plymouth, and local marine tech firm Teledyne Valeport, aims to provide communities, experts, and agencies with a better understanding of the water quality in the area's rivers and estuaries.
As of August 2025, the project has installed sensors that enable the public to access real-time data on water quality in key locations across the district. This data will be shared through an online dashboard, giving everyone a transparent view of the region's waterways. The project has been shaped by collaboration with community-led river and estuary groups, who have advised on the best sensor locations to capture accurate insights.
Executive member for climate change and biodiversity, John McKay, hailed the project as a brilliant example of cooperation between communities, researchers, and businesses to tackle real environmental problems. He emphasized that the real-time data will empower everyone to play a role in protecting the local rivers and coastline.
