Delhi Sprinklers Fight Pollution From Sky
6 Mar
Summary
- Water sprinklers on 1,000 street lights combat Delhi's air pollution.
- Green walls at 47 roundabouts use recycled water for irrigation.
- Delhi's PWD also rejuvenated 10 parks and upgraded road infrastructure.

New Delhi is enhancing its anti-pollution measures with innovative strategies deployed by the Public Works Department (PWD). A significant initiative involves installing water sprinkler systems on 1,000 street light poles across the capital, with 271 units already in place. Complementing this, 305 mist spray systems are operational to bolster dust control and elevate air quality.
The PWD is also focusing on green beautification projects. Work is underway at 47 roundabouts to establish green walls featuring native plants and shrubs, which are crucial for curbing road dust. These green spaces will utilize automated drip irrigation systems fed by recycled water from nearby sewage treatment plants. This aligns with broader efforts, including the recent rejuvenation of 10 major parks throughout Delhi.
Beyond environmental initiatives, the PWD has made strides in infrastructure development. Projects such as the Nand Nagri-Gagan Cinema flyover and Loni Chowk underpass in northeast Delhi have been completed. A large-scale road redevelopment program, covering 1,440 km, has also commenced, promising upgraded footpaths, pedestrian-friendly facilities, and green belts by 2025-26.
