Delhi's Waste Wars: New Rules Mean Zero Waste!
13 Feb
Summary
- Delhi proposes a 15-point plan for solid waste management.
- New SWM rules effective April 2026, replacing 2016 framework.
- Four-way waste segregation to be enforced citywide.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to implement the new Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026, which will take effect from April 2026, superseding the current 2016 framework. A detailed 15-point action plan has been proposed to align with these upcoming regulations.
Key components of the plan include the revival of existing zero-waste colonies and the establishment of several new ones each month. These colonies are designed for on-site waste management, significantly reducing the burden on landfills. The MCD is also directing its efforts towards enforcing a mandatory four-way segregation of waste at the source across all its wards.
This segregation will categorize waste into wet, dry, sanitary, and special care types. To support these efforts, new Micro Recovery Facilities (MRFs) will be identified, and existing waste points will be upgraded. The plan emphasizes integrating informal waste pickers into the formal system through consultations and incentives, ensuring a more organized and efficient waste management process.
