While heavy rainfall on two days helped cleanse the air, a significant dry spell for the remainder of the month led to a rise in pollution levels.
The month saw two consecutive 'poor' air quality days, fifteen 'moderate' days, and twelve 'satisfactory' days. A brief respite occurred on July 9, when heavy rain brought the AQI down to a 'good' level of 48. However, dust storms originating from Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan between July 12 and 13 significantly worsened Delhi's air quality, resulting in 'poor' AQI readings.
Experts attribute the elevated pollution to fewer rainy days reducing the natural washing down of pollutants, allowing PM2.5 levels to persist. Higher PM10 levels were noted, influenced by dry dust re-suspension. Despite emission control measures, increased operations from power plants and new industrial units have hampered air quality improvements, underscoring the urgent need for aggressive action.
