Dying Lake Reborn as Delhi's First Meadow Park
6 Mar
Summary
- Delhi's first meadow park to be developed at Tikri Khurd Lake.
- Project aims to remove encroachments and restore the 40-acre waterbody.
- Park will feature native grasslands, wooded areas, and walking paths.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to rejuvenate the Tikri Khurd Lake in Narela, transforming it into the city's first meadow park. Located in north Delhi, the 40-acre waterbody, previously an oxbow lake on the Yamuna floodplain, had become heavily encroached and polluted by untreated sewage.
Officials have outlined a preliminary plan to clear encroachments and water hyacinth, followed by the development of a 10-acre open grassy area. A significant feature will be the creation of a densely wooded zone with approximately 10,000 trees and bamboo.
A 2.5-meter wide walkway, spanning 20 acres around the lake, will serve dual purposes as a walking and cycling track. The DDA has already initiated work on cleaning approach roads and issued tenders for a boundary wall.
The project emphasizes ecological restoration and the creation of nature-based public spaces. Plans include native grasslands, peripheral plantations as buffers, and rainwater harvesting systems. Shaded seating areas under tree canopies and an eco-sensitive restaurant overlooking the lake are also proposed.
To enhance visitor engagement, elevated nature-viewing decks are planned. Additionally, a small conference facility and eco-cottages are envisioned along the quieter lake edge for retreats and educational activities. Decentralized sewage treatment plants will ensure a consistent water level in the lake year-round.
