Delhi's First Green Waste Plant Opens Near ITO
25 Feb
Summary
- New plant scientifically processes horticulture waste from city roads.
- Compost generated will be reused for landscaping and PWD plantations.
- Initiative addresses complaints about roadside green waste piles.

New Delhi has taken a significant step towards scientific waste management with the inauguration of its first dedicated green waste processing plant. Located near ITO, this facility, launched by PWD minister Parvesh Verma, is designed to process horticulture waste generated from PWD-maintained roads. The plant will convert pruning waste, branches, and shrubs into compost.
This development addresses long-standing complaints from residents and schools regarding the accumulation of green waste along roadsides. Previously, such waste was dumped, leading to inconvenience and aesthetic issues. The PWD aims to ensure that compost produced at this and other upcoming facilities will be utilized for the department's own landscaping and plantation projects, promoting a circular economy.
Several other similar facilities have been completed across the city, including in Patparganj, Secretariat Nursery, Mukarba Chowk, Lajwanti Nursery, Sukhdev Vihar, and RK Puram. The department has a plan to establish at least one plant in every district to decentralize waste management. This initiative is expected to reduce waste dumping, cut transportation costs, improve soil quality, prevent drain blockages during monsoons, and minimize traffic disruptions.
