Delhi's Yamuna Water Capacity Set to Double
25 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Wazirabad pondage area to be dredged to increase water holding capacity.
- Project aims to nearly double water storage from 100 MGD to 200-250 MGD.
- Delhi Jal Board's revival project estimated at ₹25.79 crore.

The Delhi Jal Board is initiating a significant project to revitalize the Wazirabad pondage area, the primary source of raw water for the city's Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants. This revival involves dredging and excavating an estimated 3.63 lakh cubic metres of silt and debris, with the goal of increasing the riverbed's base level to 204 meters.
The pondage area, which has not been cleared for over a decade, has seen its water holding capacity diminish to approximately 100 million gallons per day. This ambitious project seeks to restore and enhance this capacity to between 200 and 250 MGD, providing a crucial buffer for Delhi's water supply, particularly during the high-demand summer season.
With bids expected to be finalized by December 9, the project carries an estimated base price of ₹25.79 crore. This initiative, previously delayed by monsoon predictions, marks a crucial step in ensuring the long-term water security for the national capital.
