Delhi Tackles Yamuna Pollution with Nano-Tech
24 Apr
Summary
- Delhi Jal Board plans in-situ cleaning using nano-technology.
- IIT-Roorkee will pilot the project on the Defence Colony drain.
- 40 decentralized sewage treatment plants are also planned.

The Delhi government is intensifying efforts to combat the severe pollution in the Yamuna River. Last year, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) outlined a comprehensive 45-point action plan, which includes the adoption of advanced in-situ cleaning technologies.
As a significant step, a pilot project will be initiated to clean drains using nano-technology. The DJB has partnered with IIT-Roorkee for this pioneering effort, which will commence at the Defence Colony drain. This method involves filtering and treating water directly within the drains, offering a viable solution while larger infrastructure projects are underway.
If successful, the nano-technology approach will be expanded to larger drains, such as the Najafgarh drain, which is the biggest among the 22 major drains flowing into the Yamuna. In areas constrained by space, the DJB also plans to install 40 decentralized sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) to manage waste locally, with 35 already approved and plans for 10 more STPs to further reduce sewage discharge into the river.
