Delhi Eyes Wildlife Compensation Policy

The Delhi government is developing a pioneering compensation framework to support residents affected by encounters with wild animals. This policy, currently in its final stages, is set to cover a wide spectrum of losses, including human fatalities, severe injuries, livestock deaths, crop damage, and property destruction.

Officials highlight that this initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on affected individuals and families. Simultaneously, it seeks to mitigate friction between local communities and wildlife conservation efforts by encouraging cooperation and supporting preventive measures.

Specific areas like Jagatpur village and agricultural lands near the Yamuna floodplains have frequently experienced such conflicts, with incidents involving leopards and nilgais damaging crops and attacking livestock. The proposed framework intends to address these recurring issues systematically.

This dedicated policy for Delhi comes as other states, such as Maharashtra and Rajasthan, have adopted similar mechanisms. The goal is to create a balanced approach that safeguards both human interests and wildlife conservation objectives, fostering greater community support for wildlife authorities.
