Delhi Taps Reek: Residents Battle Health Crisis

Residents in Delhi's Janakpuri are facing a severe water crisis, with foul-smelling water flowing from taps for the past five months. The contaminated water, described as reeking like a drainage system, has made households feel like sewers.

This ongoing issue has led to a surge in illnesses, especially among the elderly, who report repeated stomach infections and skin rashes. Many families are compelled to purchase bottled water daily, incurring costs of over Rs 100, as tap water is unsuitable for cooking or even basic household use.

Despite numerous complaints filed with local authorities, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and even IIT-Delhi, no permanent solution has been implemented. A DJB official acknowledged a sewer surcharge as the cause and stated repair work has begun, with regular flushing underway to manage the situation.

Residents report that the water quality is so poor that RO filters are failing, and plants are damaged. The crisis impacts approximately 600 people across 190 flats, who are experiencing health problems and unlivable conditions due to the persistent foul water.
