Experts emphasize that the city's current approach of responding to breakdowns is insufficient. Instead, a focus on real-time monitoring, maintaining up-to-date digital maps of underground networks, conducting routine water quality testing, and systematically replacing aging pipelines is essential.

Contamination typically arises from three conditions: a nearby pollution source like a leaking sewer or contaminated groundwater, a pathway for entry through corroded pipes or damaged joints, and hydraulic triggers such as low pressure or back-suction from household pumps. These issues are exacerbated by Delhi's growing population and an aging distribution infrastructure.

To combat these problems, experts propose implementing IoT-based sensors and integrating water distribution systems with SCADA technology. This would enable remote monitoring of network performance and facilitate prompt detection of issues like pressure drops, preventing contamination before it affects residents.
