11 Dec
Summary
- Delhi authorities ordered removal of unauthorised roadside vendors selling building materials.
- This action aims to reduce dust pollution and improve air quality in the capital.
- Inspections revealed significant dust accumulation on roads across the city.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has issued a directive to remove all unauthorised roadside vendors dealing in building and construction materials, identifying them as a significant contributor to dust pollution. This action, taken under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, aims to mitigate the persistent problem of fugitive dust generated from materials like sand, bricks, and cement stocked openly along roads.
This latest measure aligns with broader efforts under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), following orders from the Supreme Court and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The CAQM's recent inspections revealed extensive dust accumulation on roads managed by various agencies, with many inspected stretches showing moderate to high levels of visible dust, underscoring the ongoing challenge.
In parallel, authorities are addressing other pollution sources, including open dismantling of vehicles and recurring encroachments in industrial areas. The DPCC has reported these issues to the National Green Tribunal, indicating a multi-faceted approach to improving Delhi's air quality by tackling both direct dust sources and related urban blight.
