Summary
- Delhi's pollution control committee fined 15 sewage treatment plants.
- The fines total ₹2.89 crore for failing effluent discharge standards.
- The action is linked to concerns about Yamuna River contamination.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has levied fines amounting to ₹2.89 crore on the operators of more than 15 sewage treatment plants (STPs). Several of these non-compliant facilities are run by the Delhi Jal Board. This action was detailed in an affidavit submitted to the National Green Tribunal as part of a case addressing the functioning of STPs and their impact on the Yamuna River.
Show cause notices for environmental compensation were issued in December 2025 to operators of 14 STPs that failed to meet prescribed standards between July and October 2025. A separate notice was also issued to the operator of the Sen Nursing Home STP for violations observed in August 2025. The DPCC confirmed on April 13, 2026, that directions for environmental compensation totaling ₹2,89,60,000 were issued.
The imposed compensations target STPs located in areas including Okhla Phase-V, Molarband, Vasant Kunj, Mehrauli, Yamuna Vihar, Sonia Vihar, Kapashera, Nilothi, Delhi Gate Nallah, Kondli, Ghitorni, and Sen Nursing Home Nallah. Notably, the Yamuna Vihar Phase-I and Phase-III STPs received the highest fines of ₹29 lakh each.
Details regarding STP performance have been shared with IIT Delhi. Compliance monitoring scrutinizes parameters such as pH, total suspended solids, and faecal coliform levels. Higher concentrations of faecal coliform at certain STP outlets indicate that ultraviolet disinfection systems may not be functioning effectively.
