Delhi STPs Fail Again: Yamuna's Water Quality Suffers
26 May
Summary
- Nine STPs non-compliant or non-operational in April, unchanged from March.
- Yamuna Vihar Phase-3 and Ghitorni STPs failed five parameters each.
- Interceptor Sewage Project intercepted only 142 MGD of sewage, less than claimed.

In April, nine Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Delhi failed to meet operational or compliance standards, a figure unchanged from the previous month. This ongoing deficiency significantly impacts the Yamuna River's water quality. The Yamuna Vihar Phase-3 and Ghitorni STPs were identified as the most problematic, each failing on five critical parameters, including suspended solids and pollutant levels.
Recent reports highlight that even functional STPs have been consistently failing to meet required standards for months. This raises concerns about wasted resources and the lack of progress in cleaning the Yamuna. Furthermore, a substantial investment in the Interceptor Sewage Project has yielded limited results, intercepting only about 142 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage instead of the claimed 238 MGD.
