Delhi Shelters: Heat Traps, Water Woes Worsen Summer
19 May
Summary
- Shelters face severe water scarcity with irregular tanker supply.
- Non-functional cooling units and tin roofs exacerbate heat.
- Insects found in spoiled food due to poor storage and delivery.

Shelters run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) are struggling with critical issues this summer, with residents experiencing significant heat and water scarcity. Many shelters feature tin roofs that trap heat, leading to unbearable indoor temperatures as external temperatures soar above 40°C.
A recent survey highlighted widespread problems, including nearly 50% of cooling units being non-functional and an over-reliance on erratic water tanker supplies. Residents report that water availability can be inconsistent, sometimes only arriving twice a week or not at all for extended periods.
Food distributed at shelters is reportedly spoiling due to delays and lack of refrigeration, with some residents finding insects in their meals. Stagnant wastewater near some facilities has also contributed to mosquito breeding. Residents often remain unaware of mandated provisions like ORS packets and sanitary pad vending machines.
DUSIB officials acknowledge the challenges and claim intensified measures are in place, including replacing cooler filters and coordinating with the Delhi Jal Board for regular water supply. A summer action plan includes daily ORS distribution and awareness posters, though access to basic amenities remains a concern for many.
