Delhi Schools Go Hybrid as Air Quality Nears Severe
7 Nov
Summary
- Schools up to Class 5 in Delhi now offer hybrid learning due to pollution.
- Air Quality Index nearing 'severe' category ahead of Diwali celebrations.
- Restrictions also imposed on construction and certain vehicles in NCR.
Delhi schools are now offering hybrid classes for students up to Class 5, allowing parents to choose between online and in-person learning. This decision comes as the capital's Air Quality Index (AQI) neared the 'severe' mark, with a reading of 382 on Friday, just below the threshold of 401. Weather forecasts indicate a potential worsening of air quality, prompting the implementation of Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
This directive, effective immediately, covers all government, government-aided, and recognised private schools. Similar hybrid learning arrangements are mandated for students up to Class 5 in Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida). Other districts in the National Capital Region may also consider such measures, with the final choice resting with parents and guardians.
Beyond schools, GRAP Stage III imposes significant restrictions. Construction and demolition activities generating dust are limited, with exemptions for essential infrastructure projects. The movement of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers is restricted in Delhi and neighbouring districts. Stone crushers and mining activities across the NCR must halt, and offices are encouraged to operate with 50% staff attendance.
