This strategic initiative aims to combat dust and air pollution by recarpeting approximately 1,503 km of the city's extensive road network. The project, estimated at Rs 2,000 crore, is slated for completion by 2027, with significant portions planned for 2026.
The redevelopment will involve end-to-end improvements, including drainage systems, and will extend to roads in unauthorized colonies. Enhancements on bituminous roads will utilize dense carpeting and ready-mix concrete techniques. The plan allocates specific targets for recarpeting throughout 2026 and the initial months of 2027, addressing decades of neglect and improving urban infrastructure.
Despite these ambitious plans, the actual implementation remains contingent upon securing necessary funds through state government schemes, such as the CM Development Fund. Residents have expressed frustration over the ongoing issues of potholed and uneven roads, with temporary fixes proving inadequate. The MCD is actively pursuing funding to bring these much-needed road improvements to fruition.
