Delhi's government is reviving a vital real-time source apportionment study, with IIT-Delhi leading the five-year project. The study's primary objective is to identify and quantify the sources contributing to PM10 particulate matter in the city's air. Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized that the initiative will help in understanding pollution drivers and the efficacy of current interventions.
The project will establish a high-resolution air quality monitoring system, moving beyond episodic assessments. A key feature is the reoperationalization of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) supersite, which will be equipped with advanced instrumentation. This facility will be integrated with mobile monitoring units to manage pollution hotspots and identify hyperlocal sources.
Comparative assessments will be conducted using IIT-Delhi's Sonipat site and the Delhi supersite to understand regional pollution dynamics. The study is expected to cover major hotspots, with intensive seasonal sampling and continuous operations at the main laboratory. The insights gained are intended to empower policymakers with real-time data, especially during peak pollution periods.
