Summary
- Delhi LG demands waste segregation at source pilot.
- Indore's successful waste management model adopted.
- Pilot test to implement Indore's waste segregation strategy.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has initiated a push for improved waste management in Delhi, ordering a pilot test of the successful "Indore model." This directive came during a review meeting where the LG noted a critical lack of waste segregation at the source, leading to substantial waste disposal at dump sites.
The "Indore model," recognized for its effectiveness since 2016, has consistently led to Indore being awarded 'The Cleanest City' title in India's Swachh Survekshan survey since 2017. Its comprehensive approach includes mandatory source segregation into multiple categories, efficient door-to-door collection, and effective composting and dry waste recovery processes.
Officials from Indore Municipal Corporation have detailed that their model emphasizes residents segregating waste into up to six categories. This system, coupled with optimized collection routes and GPS-enabled vehicles, has enabled the removal of public dustbins and reduced open dumping. A team from Delhi is scheduled to visit Indore this week for further research and to adapt components for Delhi's pilot program.
