CNG Conversions Surge as Delhi Restricts Old Cars
4 Nov
Summary
- Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram see up to 50% jump in CNG installations.
- Vehicle owners are converting older cars to CNG to comply with norms.
- CNG conversion costs range from approximately Rs 35,000 to Rs 70,000.

New Delhi government regulations restricting the entry of older, non-compliant vehicles have led to an unprecedented surge in CNG conversion requests at installation centers in Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. Since November 1, 2026, BS-IV and older petrol and diesel vehicles not registered in Delhi face prohibitions within the capital until January 31, 2027, exempting CNG, electric, and emergency vehicles.
This has prompted many vehicle owners in surrounding areas who frequently travel to Delhi to consider converting their existing cars to CNG. Installation centers report demand increases of up to 50%, with costs ranging from approximately Rs 35,000 to Rs 70,000 depending on the vehicle's standard. This retrofit option is seen as a cost-effective solution for middle-class families.
The trend is noticeable across multiple cities, with installers in Ghaziabad and Karnal observing substantial week-over-week increases in installations and inquiries. This surge is more pronounced than the usual seasonal rise during pollution months, driven by the direct impact of the new entry restrictions and a growing personal responsibility towards reducing pollution.
Daily commuters, parents dropping children at schools, and office-goers have faced significant delays at Delhi-NCR border crossings due to intensified checks enforcing these new rules. The Bharat Stage (BS) emission standards, with the stricter BS-VI norms in effect nationwide since April 1, 2020, underscore the ongoing efforts to control vehicular pollution in the region.
