Delhi-NCR's EV Mandate Sparks Industry Fears
27 Feb
Summary
- Expert panel recommends only electric cars in Delhi-NCR by 2030.
- Transport accounts for 23% of Delhi-NCR's PM 2.5 concentrations.
- Gas distributors and carmakers warn of infrastructure cost increases.

An expert panel's recommendation for Delhi-NCR to exclusively register electric vehicles by 2030 has raised concerns among city gas distributors and car manufacturers. This proposed mandate aims to address significant air pollution, with transport sources contributing 23% to PM 2.5 concentrations in the region.
Gas distributor Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has proposed a "dual pathway" strategy, advocating for CNG adoption in medium and heavy vehicles while promoting electric mobility for two-wheelers. IGL also suggested converting diesel vehicles to CNG, emphasizing that CNG emits minimal particulate matter.
Industry associations, like the Association of Citygas Distribution Entities (ACE), argue for recognizing CNG as a distinct low-emission fuel alongside EVs, seeking equal incentives for both. Carmakers are worried about the feasibility of an all-EV transition within four years, citing insufficient charging infrastructure, grid capacity, and consumer financing in Delhi.
