NCR Chokes: AQI Hits 382, Emergency Measures Activated
6 Nov
Summary
- Stage-III restrictions are now in effect across the entire NCR.
- Delhi's average AQI reached 382, categorizing it as 'very poor'.
- Non-essential construction and certain vehicles are banned.
As Delhi's average Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 382 on Thursday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the entire National Capital Region (NCR) with immediate effect. This decision, taken as a precautionary measure, escalates the emergency response to curb worsening air pollution.
The Stage-III restrictions enforce a complete halt on non-essential construction and demolition work, including earthwork and open-air operations. The movement of BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel vehicles is prohibited in Delhi and NCR districts, with similar restrictions for inter-state diesel buses. Transporting construction materials is also banned, alongside the closure of non-clean fuel-based stone crushers, mining, and hot-mix plants.
Further measures include a ban on diesel generator sets, except for essential services. Private companies are advised to adopt work-from-home policies to reduce vehicular emissions. Additionally, schools up to Class 5 will shift to online classes to protect young children from the toxic air.
