Delhi Metro Stations Become Textile Recycling Hubs
27 May
Summary
- Delhi Metro to install textile collection boxes at 10 stations.
- Garments will be reused, upcycled, or recycled into new products.
- Upcycled products will be displayed and sold at metro stations.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to introduce a significant environmental initiative by installing special collection boxes for old clothes at 10 key metro stations in Delhi. This program aims to address the growing challenge of textile waste through scientific recycling and upcycling.
Garments collected will undergo a sorting process. Some will be distributed to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs) for reuse or to be transformed into new products such as bags and rugs. The remaining textiles will be sent to recycling facilities, where they will be processed into materials like yarn, fibre, and non-woven felt, thereby minimizing waste.
Ten specific metro stations have been identified for this project: Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka, and Shalimar Bagh. The Delhi government assures that the utilization of collected clothes will be environmentally sound, maintaining transparency and efficiency throughout the process. The DMRC also plans to designate areas within selected stations for displaying and selling these upcycled goods, with collection points to be known as Delhi Metro Ladies' Welfare Organisation (DMLWO).
