Delhi Metro Transforms Stations into Clothing Donation Hubs
4 Aug
Summary
- Arpan Kendras launched at five Delhi Metro stations for clothing donations.
- Donated clothes will be collected, segregated, recycled, and upcycled.
- Initiative promotes circular economy and women's empowerment in Delhi.
In a move to foster environmental conservation and women's empowerment, Delhi Metro has introduced 'Arpan Kendras' at its stations. These centers serve as collection points for usable old clothes, marking a significant step towards sustainable development within the capital.
The initiative, launched on Monday at five metro stations including Shalimar Bagh and Mayur Vihar Phase-1, will soon expand with five additional locations. Donors can contribute through a QR code system and receive digital receipts for their contributions.
This integrated model strengthens the circular economy by engaging women's self-help groups in the collection, segregation, recycling, and upcycling of donated textiles. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the project's role in promoting waste-to-wealth concepts and Delhi's commitment to environmental consciousness.
Gupta emphasized that the 'Arpan Kendras' align with the government's vision of a 'Delhi Model' where waste is viewed as a resource. The program aims to reduce landfill waste, conserve resources, and positively impact the lives of those in need, encouraging broad public participation.
