5 Oct
Summary
- Arpan Kendras collected 76.7 tonnes of old clothes.
- Nearly 7,600 donors contributed to the initiative.
- Initiative promotes circular economy and generates livelihoods.
Delhi Metro's unique initiative, the Arpan Kendras, has successfully collected 76.7 tonnes of old clothes and engaged close to 7,600 donors as of September 17. These 10 centers, operational since early August, allow commuters to donate used garments directly at metro stations.
The collected textiles are then directed for recycling and upcycling, promoting a circular economy. This joint effort by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, DMRC Ladies Welfare Organisation, the Delhi government's State Urban Livelihoods Mission, and two textile recycling firms aims to reduce landfill waste.
Products crafted by women from self-help groups are also displayed and sold at these Arpan Kendras. These women receive training in textile upcycling, contributing to their financial independence and fostering sustainable disposal practices.
