Delhi Plants Bamboo for Cleaner Cremations
12 Mar
Summary
- Bamboo groves will be planted around Delhi cremation sites.
- Project aims to increase green cover and reduce pollution.
- Natural fencing offers a cost-effective alternative to walls.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated a significant environmental project involving the planting of bamboo groves around the city's cremation and burial grounds. This strategic move is designed to enhance Delhi's green cover and combat air pollution, specifically addressing gases released during cremations.
This natural bio-fencing approach is promoted as a cost-effective alternative to traditional boundary walls. The dense bamboo foliage is expected to act as a natural barrier, filtering smoke and dust, thereby contributing to cleaner air in and around these facilities. The public health department will fund the initiative, with district health officers tasked with prioritizing its implementation.
Officials aim to expedite the process to allow for tender invitations and the plantation drive to commence before or during the upcoming monsoon, which is considered the optimal period for bamboo growth. The MCD oversees numerous cremation facilities and burial grounds across Delhi, many of which are managed by NGOs.
