The Delhi Jal Board has initiated a major project to address the city's water woes by developing an irrigation system that utilizes treated wastewater. The ₹45.58 crore initiative aims to connect 74 parks and 16 waterbodies in east Delhi to the Yamuna Vihar sewage treatment plant, reducing the reliance on groundwater for irrigation.
According to officials, the project is expected to be completed within a year. It will involve setting up a pumping mechanism and a network of 55,720 meters of pipelines to carry the treated wastewater to 90 locations, including the Yamuna Vihar Sports Complex, Rajeev Gandhi mini stadium, and parks in Vivek Vihar, Dilshad Garden, and other neighboring areas.
The 16 waterbodies that are part of the project include the 32-acre Welcome Jheel, the 9-acre Mustafabad lake, and several ponds in Nand Nagri, Ghonda Chauhan Banger, Jhilmil, and Tahirpur. The initiative aims to rejuvenate these water bodies and reduce the city's dependence on groundwater for irrigation.
The project is being undertaken in response to a 2023 National Green Tribunal judgment that directed the Delhi Jal Board to supply treated effluent and prepare a detailed project report in consultation with the relevant authorities. The tribunal had asked the Jal Board to complete the project in phases, with the first phase expected to be ready by 2025.
