Delhi Swelters: Heatwave, Poor Air Quality, Record Power Demand
20 May
Summary
- Delhi experienced its first heatwave day with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.
- Air quality dropped to 'Poor' with an AQI of 336, triggering GRAP Stage 1.
- The city's power demand reached a record high of 7,776 MW on Tuesday.

Delhi recorded its first heatwave day of the month on Tuesday, with temperatures surpassing 45 degrees Celsius due to dry winds and intense sunshine. This climatic condition coincided with a decline in air quality, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) to 336, classified as 'Poor'.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) responded by activating Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR. This measure includes restrictions such as banning coal and firewood in food establishments and limiting diesel generator use. The forecast indicates the AQI will likely remain in the 'Poor' category for the coming days.
Adding to the challenges, Delhi's power demand hit an all-time high of 7,776 megawatts on Tuesday. This surge is significant, as the city crossed the 7,000 MW mark earlier than in previous years. Projections suggest Delhi's peak power demand could exceed 9,000 MW this year, surpassing the 2025 record.
