Delhi Gymkhana's Ancient Trees Face Eviction Threat
15 Jul
Summary
- 486 mature trees, 51 species documented on Delhi Gymkhana campus.
- Ecologist notes some trees may be over 100 years old.
- Eviction notice issued as club's land lease ended May 22.
A survey conducted in June documented 486 mature trees, comprising 51 species, on the Delhi Gymkhana campus. These trees, some estimated to be over 100 years old, represent a significant urban tree assemblage in the capital.
The identified trees provide essential ecological services, including supporting biodiversity and offering resources for various pollinators and fruit-eating animals. Many are native species such as Neem, Mango, and Peepal, with their ecological value increasing with age.
This documentation comes as the Delhi Gymkhana Club is under scrutiny, having received an eviction notice from the Centre due to its land lease ending on May 22. The notice questions why eviction should not be ordered for its "unauthorised occupation of public premises."
Environmentalists emphasize that mature trees cannot be replaced by compensatory planting and are crucial for public health, cooling the city and filtering pollution. They urge decision-makers to recognize these trees as indispensable natural infrastructure.
