Delhi Metro Stations Now Collect Old Clothes
15 Jul
Summary
- Collection centers for old clothes to be set up at 10 metro stations.
- Donated clothes will be sorted for reuse, upcycling, or recycling.
- Initiative promotes environmental protection and women's empowerment.

The Delhi government has initiated a project to address textile waste and foster a circular economy by setting up 'Arpan Kendras,' collection centers for old clothes, at ten metro stations across the city. These centers, operational from 7 am to 7 pm, are located at Shahdara, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Malviya Nagar, Hauz Khas, Dwarka, Mohan Estate, Lajpat Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Punjabi Bagh West, and Shalimar Bagh metro stations.
Citizens can donate garments by scanning a QR code at the kiosks, submitting their details and information about the clothes, and receiving a digital certificate. A centralized dashboard will provide real-time tracking and transparency of donations, monitored station-wise.
This initiative ensures that old garments are diverted from landfills and appropriately sorted for reuse, upcycling, or recycling. Wearable clothes will be repurposed into bags and decorative items by women-led self-help groups, while unusable textiles will be transformed into yarn and other raw materials. Religious garments will be handled with specific care.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that the program combines environmental protection with women's empowerment. Future plans include expanding the initiative to more metro stations beyond the initial ten.
